What Ephesians 2:8 says
Three words carry the verse. Grace is the rescue nobody earned. Faith is how it is received, not how it is paid for. Gift is the word Paul uses so there is no confusion about whose work it was. Verse 9 closes the last loophole: not by works, so that no one can boast. Most Christian t-shirts pick a verse that sounds strong. This one was picked because it takes the credit away from the person wearing it.
That is also why it sits under the print instead of above it. The big letters make the claim. The small reference says where the claim comes from. Anyone who reads the back of the shirt at a stoplight gets both.
The verse in context
Ephesians 2 opens with people described as dead in their sins, following the way of the world. Verses 4 and 5 turn on two words, but God, and say that out of great love and mercy he made those same people alive with Christ. Verse 8 is the summary line of that turn, and verse 10 is what follows it: made new in Christ to do good works that were prepared in advance. Read together, the chapter says the rescue comes first and the good works come after, as a result and never as the price. That order is the whole reason the print reads I'm living proof and not I earned this.
Why the shirt says living proof
Living proof is a description of the founder, not a promise to the buyer. In 2020, during the pandemic, Keith was locked in a jail cell, isolated and in the grip of drug addiction. In his own words on the About page: "In that forced silence and deep isolation, I picked up a torn-up Bible left behind in my cell. It was the first time I had ever truly read Scripture." NVUS Hearts was born there. The name means taking a completely broken heart and mending it through faith.
He was baptized about two months before the brand launched. The brand started with five dollars. The first sale, on April 12, 2024, was one shirt for five dollars. The marketing budget on day one was zero: a yellow cardboard sign at a train station that read "million dollar dreams. believe in me." and a folding table at a street fair. He put together a spot to work in his basement and pressed every shirt himself. Two years later there are four lines, every order is still pressed by hand, and Keith serves at the church that walked with him through recovery.
So when the shirt says living proof, it means the man who pressed it is the proof. Ephesians 2:8 is not a decoration on his story. It is the summary of it.
How the Living Proof tee is made
The lettering is drawn by hand first, then pressed. There is no stock font on this shirt. Every tee is pressed by the founder in Boston, one at a time, which is why the print sits exactly where it should on every size. The fit is oversized, the way streetwear is worn now, and it comes in black, beige and white in sizes S through XXL. The same lettering lives on an embroidered patch on the Living Proof trucker hat, with Ephesians 2:8 stitched beneath it, so the two can be worn together.
It is a Christian t-shirt in the plainest sense: scripture on the back, made by a believer, sold by a brand that started in a cell. It is also streetwear in the plainest sense: heavy lettering, oversized cut, meant for the street and not the pew, though it is welcome in both.
